AQ 08 The Last Adventure
Posted: Thursday, September 18, 2008 by Ian Howerton inMy adventure begins. I'm not sure how many or even who knows about this part of the road trip yet but here goes. So after spending a week in San Fran at Sarah's house (Kdawg's sister) and thinking about my life I had made a decision. It was not an easy choice to make at all, for several reasons. I had to think about school which was the whole point of the move, my financial situation after driving around the country for a month, what city I could be happy in, my friends that I missed alot, and especially having to leave Joe. So I'm sure your ready to know what choice I made, well here's what happened.

Did anyone catch the progression of death as I drove across the state further and further into the blistering desert. Just look at my hand on the steering wheel and how dried up it got. It would have gotten worse heading, again, into Utah but the sun was going down thankfully. Well at least that's what I thought.

Until I got to Wyoming. Yes that's right just 8 hours ago it was almost 100 in the desert and as I drove across Utah after that sunset it dropped nearly 80 degrees. Cause when I stopped that night in Utah right near the border it was 27. This is what I woke up to, I took this with my crappy point and shoot as I drove by cause it was only in the high 30's that morning and I didn't wanna get outta the car. I honestly couldn't believe this was happening. Apparently just like last road trip they had an unusual cold front come down from the north. I thought to myself, it couldn't get any worse.
Oh well, I was wrong about that. As I drove across Wyoming and down from the mountain it began to warm up. That's not a bad thing except for the rain that started bout 100 miles from the border of Nebraska. This rain met up with hurricane Ike's rain and it lasted the next 16 hours straight.

Welcome to the beautiful state of Iowa.
The best gas stations ever. Period.

Here I am in my final destination after a 3 day long drive all alone through every element and condition known to mankind. Oh but it wasn't over yet. Because as I drove into Chicago Ike had decided to flood nearly every road leading into the city. As I came across highway 30 I had to take many detours due to road closings. On one particular road water was covering it but not very deep until a huge dip from construction you couldn't see. My car got flooded and died. I had to have the truck behind me push my car up the hill so I could crank it again and dry out the engine. This happened when I was about 20 minutes from the city, however it took me another 2 hours to get there due to the weather, construction and road closings. Like I said in my video it was a difficult strenuous trip but I really love Chicago from what I saw on last year's trip and living here for a week now. It's really an amazing city, I just hope I can survive the winter. Look for more madness to come in the next few weeks as I search for a job, place to live and deal with the worst winter I'm sure Chicago has ever had. I'd like to end this blog by saying thanks to everyone who helped me and Joe along the way. Katie and her sister , as well as Karen and your sister Sarah you ladies were extremely generous with opening up your home to us. I don't know what I would've done without you Sarah and Michael you guys were life savers when the plans all fell apart. I also want to thank my good ol' friend Lauren for letting me live with her for a few weeks here till I get settled. As for everyone else I appreciate your phone calls and support especially on my birthday. I hope you all enjoyed the insanity of this trip, I've enjoyed letting you guys/gals in on it. Much love, till next time.
