Snowboardfest 1 0000HHHHH at Lake Tahoe
Posted: Monday, March 8, 2010 by Ian Howerton inWell this was an amazing/exhausting weekend. Not only did it kick off with the Achenbach trip but right after that was over me and my roomie drove up to Lake Tahoe for a little snowboarding action. However, the trip turned out not to be as easy at it sounded. It only takes 3 and 1/2 hours to get to Lake Tahoe from San Francisco. Not this trip of course. We were driving into a blizzard but we thought we'd beat it there and we almost did. At around 11pm we were only a half hour away from our destination when we encountered hella traffic. Turns out Cal Transit Authority had blocked off the interstate and were only letting 4x4 drive with snow tires or chains through. Lame right, almost beat the storm there. So did we turn around and go home you ask. It's me of course not. We drove back down towards Sacramento and took route 50 that I knew about from the previous road trip a year ago over into Nevada. Stopped at a gas station right on the border of the two states and finally got lucky finding some snow chains. We drove up the south east side of the lake which was open to those with just snow chains or 4x4 drive and made it finally to our hotel at 7:30 AM. Yes that's right 12 hours of insanely beautiful night blizzard driving but we made it. Sorry no pics of the blizzard. It was to dark, windy, and wild with snow to get anything. Trust me though it was a very slow paced but stunning experience. Especially since my roomie David had not ever seen snow or been boarding, he was ecstatic. It was great boarding too since it was 14-18 inches of fresh powder that fell we were on. Not to mention the full moon hours of night boarding we did as well. Just an amazing experience for the books. Here are some pics of the day we were leaving and from my phone the day we shredded the slopes. Lake Tahoe is in my top 10 most breathtaking places I've been in the United States. Coming from me thats pretty serious.
Those are gorgeous pictures.
